Mother-Daughter Workplace Visit: She took her mother to her workplace at Meta, and the moment is winning hearts: Why a workplace visit with parents means so much to children

For many parents, a child’s success is not really about the designation on their visiting card or the name of the company they work for. It is about seeing the child they once worried over, encouraged and perhaps quietly sacrificed for, find their feet in the world.A similar mother-daughter moment is winning hearts online. An Indian woman Sheel Sanghvi recently shared a video on Instagram documenting her mother’s visit to her workplace, Meta’s headquarters in California. The mother took a glimpse of her daughter’s professional life.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

The day was not presented as a grand celebration. Instead, it unfolded through small, ordinary moments- breakfast together on the campus, walking around, lunch and, eventually, a look inside the office where Sanghvi works. And perhaps that is exactly why the moment felt so familiar.Sanghvi captured that sentiment in the caption accompanying her video, saying that making her mother proud would always be her “biggest flex”. The post attracted warm reactions from social media users, many of whom described the moment as wholesome and touching.

The parenting lesson is not about raising a “successful” child

It would be easy to look at a story like this and turn it into another achievement narrative: work hard, get into a big company and make your parents proud. But that misses the more interesting part. Parenting is not supposed to be a long-term project for producing an impressive résumé.Children need parents who can celebrate the person they are becoming- not only the milestones they collect.A child who eventually takes their mother to their workplace may not be trying to prove that the parenting worked. They may simply be sharing a part of their life with someone who mattered during the years when that life was being built. And that distinction matters.

There is another side to this: let children make their own definition of success

The sweetest part of Sanghvi’s story is not that she works at Meta. It is that she chose to share that part of her life with her mother. Not every child will grow up to work at a globally recognised technology company. Not every child will want to. Some will become teachers, artists, entrepreneurs, researchers, athletes, doctors, homemakers or choose careers their parents had never heard of.A healthy parent-child relationship cannot depend on one particular version of success. The bigger gift is giving children enough confidence to build a life that feels like theirs- and enough emotional security to come back and share that life with their parents.

One day, the roles quietly change

There is something poignant about parents visiting their adult children’s workplaces. For years, parents are the ones taking children places. They hold their hands while crossing roads. They accompany them to school. They wait outside examination halls. They take them to interviews. They help them move into hostels and later watch them leave home. Then, almost imperceptibly, the roles begin to reverse. The child starts showing the parent around. “Come, I’ll show you where I work.” “Let me take you here.” “Try this.” “Meet these people.”It is a small reversal, but an emotional one.The child who once needed a parent to introduce them to the world is now introducing the parent to theirs. And perhaps that is one of the quieter rewards of parenting: not seeing your child become someone impressive, but watching them become someone who still thinks, “I want my parent to be part of this moment.”For parents, that may be a far more meaningful measure of success than any job title.
