Anurag Kashyap has been in a relationship with Shubhra Shetty for the last 11 years and they have an age difference of around 20-21 years. While Kashyap is 53, Shubhra is in her 30s. In her debut interview with him, the duo spoke about their relationship, if they faced age-shaming and how Kashyap tried hard to fight it and not get into a relationship with her. Anurag and Shubhra now live in Bengaluru after the filmmaker left Mumbai.Talking about how they wanted to keep their relationship low profile during the initial years, Shubhra said in this interview with Janice Sequira on her Youtube channel, “we were trying to keep this low, we would go to parties, events but I just didn’t want to be in the media. One nosy aunty, a journalist put it out there.” When asked how her parents reacted to her dating Kashyap, she said, “My mother now thinks he’s like a henpecked husband now. But, initially, if I were a parent and my 20-year old daughter was dating a 40-year something man who is twice married, has a kid, rumoured to be a lot of other things, how would you react? I think my parents did a pretty good job.”Further opening up on their love story and how it started, Shubhra revealed, “This is where the generation difference flips in. He jumped in and told me he was in love with me and I flipped. And he said, “I don’t expect anything from you because you have to go through life but I’ve gone through life and when I say I love you, I know what I am saying. So, you take your time, see the world and come back. Then he was like crying and said, ‘Are you sure you’re ready for me and you won’t leave me.” We cry all the time. That’s one of the things that made us bond.”Anurag added, “Our bond was books, movies, festivals. She goes to more festivals than me.” When asked if he had the fear of being judged or if he was age-shamed, Anurag said, “We’ve had our share of troubles. Shaming nahi, but self-conscious. At one point I had become so conscious that I tried to push her away. Her face doesn’t look her age. So, the more I grow old and she kept looking the same, that’s why I was so conscious.”Shubhra revealed, “Because he had seen life and I had not, he was adamant that I go out and if I have to find my way back to him, I would.”

The ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ director revealed that because he was conscious about their age-difference and also did not want to spoil her career, he set her free and tried to avoid the relationship. However, he was sure that she’s the one. “I was doing work, one after the other. In my head, I knew. I have been boarding all my life in isolation. Our generation never spoke about our trama. Zindagi mein you know what you want but you’re testing the other person, you’re also testing yourself at the same time. You want to be certain that this is not going away. Though, we’ve been together for 11 years, in my head, I fully knew that this is it, when she spent an entire shoot of Nishan chi on the set. For me to come to this stage where I have my own realisation and to admit to myself and fight for it, became a long time.”Kashyap added that now he no longer seeks validation or approval from people. “One of my key reasons to alcoholism was that 90 percent of the time, I was giving validation to what others are saying and 10 percent to myself. Ever since I moved from Mumbai, I give myself the time. If I don’t feel like working today, I won’t work and she has been like that from the very beginning and I used to fight that. Her parents also have been like that. Her mother is 7-8 years older to me and she’s my very good friend,” he said.The filmmakers latest release was Bobby Deol starrer ‘Bandar’
