You have a person you text when something funny happens. You know their weekend plans. They know what has been bothering you at work. You may spend hours together, stay over, meet often, and have the kind of chemistry that makes it feel ridiculous to call this “casual.”Then someone asks, “So, are you guys together?”And you realize you have absolutely no idea what to say. This is where modern dating gets particularly confusing. A connection can feel intimate without being committed, take months to develop without being uncertain, or have an official label without actually feeling secure. So how do you tell the difference between a situationship, a slow-burn connection, and a real relationship?Counselling psychologist Damini Grover says the answer is not necessarily in how long you have been seeing someone or what you call the connection. It is in what is happening between you.“We have many new labels for relationships these days. However, most confusion stems not from the name but from not knowing where you stand in the relationship,” she says.

Here are the signs that can help make that blurry middle ground a little easier to understand.

    1. Look at whether there is a direction

The first thing to notice is not how often you talk, but whether the connection is going anywhere.A situationship can be emotionally intense while remaining completely undefined. You may spend a lot of time together and still have no shared understanding of what happens next.“A situationship usually involves connection without clarity,” Grover says.Perhaps one person keeps saying, “Let’s see where this goes.” That sentence is not necessarily a problem early on. The question is what happens after you have spent considerable time together.Does the relationship gradually become clearer, or does the same uncertainty keep returning?A slow-burn relationship may also begin without a firm commitment. But there is usually a sense that something is developing rather than simply continuing.Slow means the pace is gradual. Stuck means nothing is changing.

    2. Notice what happens when things get more serious

A relationship does not become serious only when someone announces, “We are official.”Often, the change can be seen in smaller things first. You start making plans further ahead. You become more involved in each other’s lives. Personal conversations become easier. There is greater emotional openness. Decisions begin to take the other person into account. In a slow burn, these changes tend to accumulate.

“There is more and more consistency, curiosity, and emotional investment as time progresses,” Grover explains. That progression is important because, as she puts it, “slow doesn’t equal unsure.”Two people can be cautious and still be moving towards one another.

    3. Pay attention to how the future is handled

You do not need to ask someone on the second date where they see the relationship going. But eventually, the future enters the conversation in some form.Maybe you are discussing a trip next month. Maybe one person talks about an event they would like you to attend. Maybe the conversation turns to exclusivity, commitment, or what each of you is looking for.The response can tell you something.Someone who is taking things slowly may not have a five-year plan for the relationship, but they can still talk honestly about what they want and where they see things heading. In a situationship, conversations about the future can remain permanently vague. This is also why Grover says the question “What are we?” deserves attention when it becomes frightening to ask.“If the question ‘What are we?’ is scary because you’re afraid the answer could make the relationship disappear or if the answer is ‘I don’t know,’ then that’s something worth paying attention to,” she says. The concern is not that someone needs to have every answer immediately. It is whether there is room to have the conversation at all.

    4. Check whether you are part of each other’s real lives

There is a difference between having a private connection and building a shared one.

A situationship can sometimes exist almost entirely inside its own bubble. You meet, talk, spend time together, and then return to separate lives.A committed relationship gradually becomes part of everyday life. That can mean meeting friends and family, being included in plans, knowing what is happening in each other’s worlds, or simply being someone the other person naturally turns to.“You understand what you mean to each other, you make the effort, you’re emotionally available, and you want to share each other’s lives,” Grover says of a dedicated relationship. It is not about spending every waking hour together. It is about whether there is a genuine place for the other person in your life.

    5. See what happens when something goes wrong

A relationship is often easier to understand during an uncomfortable conversation than during a romantic date. What happens when one person is hurt? Can you say, “That bothered me,” without fearing that the relationship will suddenly disappear? Can the other person listen without immediately becoming defensive or withdrawing? And after an argument, is there an attempt to understand what happened and repair the situation?“Difficult conversations don’t always get avoided because both people know they must talk and repair if they want to stay in the relationship,” Grover says. That does not mean a real relationship has no conflict. It means conflict does not automatically become a reason to run from the relationship. The ability to repair matters because a connection is tested not only by how two people feel when everything is going well but also by how they handle the moments that are not.

    6. Stop judging the relationship by its best moments

This is where many people get caught in the overthinking cycle.

One incredible date makes you feel certain they are falling for you. One distant message makes you question everything. A romantic weekend feels like proof of commitment. Then a few days of mixed signals bring all the doubts back.Instead of collecting these moments as evidence, look at the pattern.Grover describes the difference in three simple statements:Situationship: “I don’t know where this is headed.”Slow burn: “We’re taking our time, but I can see it building.”Dedicated or real relationship: “We know what we’re building.”The distinction is not about who sends more messages or who plans better dates. It is about whether the relationship has a recognizable pattern of direction, investment, and mutual understanding.

    7. Ask whether you are getting what you actually want

There is one question that can get lost when you are busy trying to figure out another person’s feelings:What do I want? You may spend weeks asking yourself whether they like you enough, whether they are scared of commitment, or whether they will eventually change their mind. But even if you get the answer, another question remains. Is what they are offering enough for you?Grover points out that people sometimes accept ambiguity because they fear that asking for clarity could push the other person away.“Sometimes people tolerate ambiguity because they’re afraid that asking for clarification will drive the other person away,” she says. That fear can be powerful, especially when you genuinely care about someone. But staying silent does not necessarily preserve a relationship. It can simply leave two people with different expectations for longer.“The thing is that clarity doesn’t ruin the right relationship. It shows you whether both people want the same one,” Grover adds.

So, is it a situationship, a slow burn, or a real relationship?

There is no fixed number of dates after which a connection has to become official. Some relationships develop quickly. Others need considerably more time. The useful distinction is what that time is producing.

If months pass and you are still afraid to ask what you mean to each other, you may be dealing with ambiguity rather than patience. If you are taking things slowly but becoming more emotionally invested, consistent, and involved in each other’s lives, you may simply be in a slow burn. And if both people understand the commitment, make room for each other, and are willing to have difficult conversations and repair what goes wrong, the label is being supported by behaviour.Ultimately, Grover says the most important question is not, “What do I call this?”It is: “Does this connection offer me enough clarity, consistency, and emotional safety for the kind of relationship I want?”That may be a much more useful question than trying to find the perfect dating label.Because sometimes the difference between a situationship and a slow burn is not how strong the feelings are.It is whether those feelings are taking the relationship somewhere.Images: Canva (for representative purposes only)
