How ‘Oggy and the Cockroaches’ became linked to Sunny Deol in India
Created by Jean-Yves Raimbaud and produced by Gaumont Multimedia in Canada, ‘Oggy and the Cockroaches’ ran for seven seasons between 1998 and 2019. The show made its India debut on Nickelodeon in 2009, before Cartoon Network picked up the rights in 2012 and introduced Bollywood-flavoured voiceovers. It was this dubbed version, which gave the green cat Jack a voice modelled on Sunny Deol, that turned the series into a genuine slice of Indian pop culture.Helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi, ‘Batwara 1947’ casts Sunny Deol as a Muslim man who relocates to Pakistan during Partition, only to find a Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, still residing in his newly acquired home. As the situation grows tense, he sets out to shield her while also ensuring his own family’s safety. Rounding out the cast are Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur, with the film hitting theatres on August 14 under the Aamir Khan Productions banner.
