From the iconic “Alright, alright, alright” in Dazed and Confused to becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognisable actors, Matthew McConaughey has spent decades learning what it takes to find his place in the industry. Now, as a father, he watches his son Levi take his first steps into the same world but he is careful not to hand him a ready-made path.McConaughey recently spoke about his son Levi, who is exploring acting, and made it clear that neither he nor his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, is putting pressure on their children to enter the entertainment industry.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

“I’m not adding that pressure, his mother’s not,” McConaughey said in a conversation on the Today show. “Right now we’re saying, look, you’re young, life’s an adventure, try as many things out as you can,” he said. The actor said he and Camila can help their children get “in some doors.” But once they are inside, the responsibility belongs to them. “Once you’re in the door, you’ve got to handle it yourself, and you’ll be measured on your own merit,” he said.A parent can provide an opportunity, but cannot do the work, face the rejection or build the skill for a child.

McConaughey said Levi is enjoying acting and has talent, but is still learning the craft. That is something the actor understands from his own experience.“When I got into acting, I didn’t really know what I was doing,” he recalled. He said he had “good instincts” but only truly learned the craft after working with the late Penny Allen, whom he described as his mentor for 20 years.Allen taught him what to look for in a script and a character and even how to handle difficult moments on a set when he felt tense. Now, McConaughey is watching his son go through a similar process of learning. “He’s still learning some of those things, and whatever he does, we’re behind him, and he’s enjoying it,” he said. And perhaps that is one of the most important things parents can do when a child shows an interest in something: resist the urge to turn an early interest into a career plan.A child who enjoys acting at 15 does not necessarily need to become an actor. A child who loves cricket does not have to become a professional cricketer. A teenager who enjoys coding does not need to start thinking about a technology career immediately.Sometimes children need space to be interested in something without being asked where it will lead.

“Make a fool of yourself. Fail more.”

In another conversation with E! News, McConaughey spoke more directly about the advice he gives Levi. Acting, he said, requires the ability to handle rejection. He explained that people need to love the process enough that repeated “nos” do not break their confidence. He also encouraged his son to take risks rather than leave an opportunity wondering what might have happened. “It’s better to make a fool of yourself and find out,” McConaughey said, than leave an audition thinking, “Oh, I had that moment and I hesitated.”There is a parenting lesson hidden inside that advice. Children are often taught to avoid embarrassment. Get the answer right. Don’t say something silly. Don’t make mistakes in front of people. Don’t fail. But if children become too afraid of looking foolish, they can also become afraid of trying.A teenager who never raises a hand because they might give the wrong answer is not learning confidence. A child who refuses to audition because they might not get selected is not learning resilience. And a young adult who avoids applying for opportunities because they might be rejected may eventually become more comfortable with regret than failure.

What parents can take away from this

McConaughey’s comments offer a useful framework for parents who want to support their children without taking over.Give exposure, not expectationsIf your child is interested in music, sport, theatre, photography or anything else, help them experience it. Find a class. Take them to an event. Introduce them to someone who knows the field. But avoid immediately saying, “You could make a career out of this.” Exposure helps children discover what they enjoy. Expectations can make that enjoyment feel like an obligation.Separate opportunity from achievementThis may be one of the hardest things for parents. You can pay for the coaching. You can help prepare the application. You can make the introduction. You can drive your child to practice. But the performance belongs to the child.McConaughey’s “open the door” philosophy is useful because it keeps the parent’s role clear: provide access and support, but don’t confuse support with guaranteed success.Teach children how to handle rejection before they need toParents often prepare children for success but not for the emotional reality of not getting what they wanted. Instead of only saying, “You’ll get it next time,” try asking: What did you learn? What would you do differently? Do you still enjoy doing it?Let children be beginnersMcConaughey acknowledged that Levi is still learning the skill. That sounds obvious, but children today are often exposed to highly polished performances online. They see the finished product without seeing the years of practice behind it. Parents can remind them that being bad at something initially is not a reason to quit.Don’t make your child’s interest your unfinished dreamThis may be the most important lesson for parents. A parent may see a child’s talent and immediately imagine a future. But the child has to live that future. Even when parents have knowledge, contacts or resources, the final choice should remain with the child.McConaughey and Camila have three children, and the actor says they will do their best to open doors for them. What the children do with those opportunities is ultimately up to them. Children don’t need parents who can guarantee that every attempt will succeed. They need parents who make failure survivable. McConaughey’s advice to “make a fool of yourself” may sound like a lesson for aspiring actors, but it applies far beyond Hollywood.
