The Godrej family has a new face at the top. Pirojsha Godrej, 45, has taken charge of Godrej Industries, stepping into the role previously held by his uncle, Nadir Godrej. The change took effect on August 14, 2026, marking another big generational shift in one of India’s most familiar business families.
But who exactly is Pirojsha Godrej?
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s already spent years building his own profile within the group. Long before taking over the wider Godrej empire, he was the man behind the rise of Godrej Properties.And his story is a little less predictable than you might expect.
He wasn’t always planning to join the family business
Pirojsha is the youngest of Adi and Parmeshwar Godrej’s three children. He grew up in one of India’s most prominent business families, but that didn’t necessarily mean he was set on becoming a businessman.In his early twenties, he was actually more interested in public policy.In 2002, he interned at Hillary Clinton’s US Senate office and also worked with India’s Ministry of External Affairs. At one point, politics was reportedly something he had considered as a possible career.Then he changed direction.In 2004, Pirojsha joined Godrej Properties, which at the time was a much smaller part of the family business. What followed was a career that would eventually put him in charge of one of India’s biggest real estate companies.
The Godrej Properties story
Pirojsha became Managing Director and CEO of Godrej Properties at just 31.Over the years, the company expanded rapidly under his leadership. Godrej Properties now describes itself as India’s largest residential real estate developer by sales, a position it has held since FY21.One reason behind that growth was a relatively simple idea: don’t necessarily buy and hold huge amounts of land.Instead, the company often partnered with landowners and developed projects together. That allowed it to expand into more cities without taking on the same kind of land-heavy model used by many traditional developers.For Pirojsha, it wasn’t just about putting up buildings either. He’s spoken about being interested in the design and creative side of real estate.That interest has stayed with him even as his responsibilities have grown.
Now he’s taking over the bigger Godrej group
Pirojsha’s new job is on a completely different scale.As Executive Chairperson of Godrej Industries, he’ll oversee a group spanning six businesses, including consumer products, real estate, capital, chemicals and other sectors.The group is currently valued at around ₹2 lakh crore.Pirojsha wants to take that number to ₹5 lakh crore within five years.That’s a huge target. And it gives his first few years in the top job a pretty clear test.But he isn’t talking about growth at any cost.Pirojsha has said the group has sometimes been too conservative with capital and has spread itself across businesses without building enough scale in each. His focus now is on making individual businesses stronger and giving their leadership teams more accountability.So the next chapter may be less about adding more companies and more about getting the existing ones to perform better.
He’s also a collector
Away from boardrooms and balance sheets, Pirojsha has a somewhat unexpected hobby: collecting rare books, manuscripts and memorabilia.His collection has included letters written by Mahatma Gandhi.He’s also a keen traveller. A 2012 profile noted that he had already visited 62 countries at the time.And yes, there are more adventurous interests too. Jet skiing has been among his pastimes.It’s a slightly different picture from the standard image of a corporate heir – and perhaps that’s what makes his story interesting.
He’s part of a major Godrej family reshuffle
Pirojsha’s appointment isn’t happening in isolation.The Godrej family reorganised its business interests in 2024, splitting the group’s operations between two sides of the family.Pirojsha is now leading the Godrej Industries Group, while Jamshyd Godrej and Nyrika Holkar took charge of the Godrej Enterprises Group.Within his own immediate family, his father Adi Godrej is Chairman Emeritus. His sisters Tanya Dubash and Nisaba Godrej also hold senior positions connected to the group’s businesses.And the man Pirojsha has replaced, Nadir Godrej, is his uncle.So this isn’t just a change of CEO or chairman. It’s another step in the Godrej family’s transition to its next generation.
What Pirojsha wants to do next
Pirojsha has described the transition as something that has been happening gradually rather than as a sudden handover.Now, though, the responsibility is officially his.His goal is straightforward on paper: take a group worth about ₹2 lakh crore and turn it into a ₹5 lakh crore business over five years.Whether he gets there will depend on what he does with the businesses already under his watch.For someone who once considered public policy and politics instead of business, Pirojsha Godrej has ended up in a very different place.At 45, he’s now one of the youngest members of India’s billionaire-business family generation to take charge of a group of this size.And the real story is just beginning.
