Aluminium foil and baking soda hack for shining silverware at home: Simple and easy DIY trick to clean silver utensils without scrubbing

Silverware in our kitchens adds the right touch of royalty, show, and purpose when used during festivals, religious worship, or generally while relishing food. But it often happens that when we take these utensils out for use, we notice that the lustrous and shiny silver is covered in tarnish, the black oxide layer formed over the surface. But now you don’t need to run errands to the jeweller to fix it. One of the most popular kitchen hacks for reviving dull, tarnished silver uses three things almost every home already has: aluminium foil, baking soda, and salt.Let’s dig in to find out how this hack exactly works.

How to clean your silverware in simple, easy steps

For cleaning your silverware, line a heatproof dish with foil, with its shiny side up, and place your silver pieces on it so they’re touching the foil but not each other.Sprinkle over the baking soda and salt, then pour in boiling water until everything is fully covered. Let it sit for five to ten minutes, flipping pieces halfway through so every surface gets contact with the foil. Heavily tarnished items may need two to three turns to clean the utensils. Follow this by rinsing under clean water and buff dry with a soft cloth.

How to get the best results

Use a shallow, wide container so every piece can touch the foil directly, since contact is what helps the reaction. Do this process in a well-ventilated space, as it can release a faint sulfur smell. If the water cools before the tarnish clears, refresh it along with a fresh sprinkle of baking soda and salt. For very heavy tarnish, plan on repeating the soak rather than extending one long session, and always finish with a thorough rinse and dry to prevent water spots.

Precautions to be taken during the procedure

The aluminium baking soda hack should be avoided with delicate jewellery or utensils that are lined with gems and decoratives or those that have a thin layering. Apart from that, it should be skipped on silver-plated items, since the reaction and hot water can loosen or strip the plating from the base metal underneath. Avoid it on jewellery or flatware with glued embellishments, gemstones, or pearls, as heat and moisture can weaken adhesives and damage porous stones. It’s also not recommended for antiques, ornately engraved pieces, or anything with fine detailing, since the process can dull patterns over repeated use.
