Sunny Deol-led ‘Batwara 1947’ is witnessing its crucial first Monday at the box office after recording a sharp jump in collections on Day 2. The Rajkumar Santoshi-directed Partition drama opened at Rs. 5.75 crore net in India before surging to Rs. 13.50 crore on Saturday. After collecting Rs. 7.25 crore on Day 3, the film has entered Day 4, its first Monday after a holiday aided opening weekend. The immediate target for the period drama is now to cross the Rs. 30 crore domestic net milestone, while its worldwide gross could move closer to the Rs. 40 crore mark as the day’s final figures are updated.‘Batwara 1947’s theatrical journey continues to run parallel to Emraan Hashmi’s ‘Awarapan 2’, which released on the same day and has comfortably emerged as the bigger box office draw of the two Independence Day releases. With Hashmi’s film already running well ahead in both collections and screen count, ‘Batwara 1947’s next milestone will likely be less about competing head-to-head and more about holding on to whatever weekday shows it can, while leaning on positive word of mouth and Sunny Deol‘s performance to ensure it doesn’t fall out of the multiplex circuit entirely before the week is out.
