5 things nobody tells you about forgiving someone who hurt you
5 things nobody tells you about forgiving someone who hurt you

Forgiveness is often presented as the mature thing to do. Someone hurts you, you process it, you let it go, and you move on. Sounds simple enough. In real life, it rarely works that neatly.Sometimes you know you should forgive someone but are nowhere near ready. Sometimes you have forgiven them but still do not want them in your life. And sometimes what you really need is not to forgive the person at all but to stop carrying what they did everywhere you go.Before you decide to forgive, there are a few things worth understanding.

    1. Forgiving someone does not mean saying what they did was okay

This is probably the biggest misunderstanding about forgiveness. You can forgive someone and still believe that what they did was unfair, cruel, or completely unacceptable. Forgiveness does not rewrite the past or turn a hurtful action into an understandable one.You are allowed to say, “I forgive you, but what happened still hurt me.”That distinction matters because forgiveness should not require you to betray your own experience. You do not have to minimize what happened just to appear kind or emotionally mature.

    2. You do not have to forgive on someone else’s timeline

There is no deadline for forgiveness. If someone keeps telling you to “just let it go,” they may mean well, but they are not the person living with the memory. Healing can take time, especially when the hurt came from someone you trusted. You may need distance before you can even think about forgiveness. You may need to be angry for a while. You may need to understand what happened and how it changed you.Being unable to forgive someone today does not mean you will feel the same way forever.

    3. Forgiveness does not automatically mean reconciliation

You can forgive someone and still choose not to have them back in your life. This is where boundaries become important.Forgiving an ex does not mean getting back together. Forgiving a friend does not mean becoming close again. Forgiving a family member does not mean giving them unlimited access to you.Sometimes forgiveness simply means deciding that you no longer want their actions to occupy so much space in your mind. You can wish someone well from a distance.

    4. You can forgive someone without receiving an apology

An apology can help, but your healing cannot always depend on someone else finally saying the right words. Some people never apologize. Some apologize years later. Some apologize only after they realize they have lost access to you. And some will never accept that they hurt you in the first place.Waiting for that acknowledgement can keep you emotionally tied to the person.Forgiveness can sometimes begin with accepting that you may never get the explanation, apology, or closure you wanted.

    5. Forgiveness is not the same as forgetting

You can remember what happened and still move forward. In fact, remembering can sometimes be useful. It can teach you what you will and will not tolerate in future relationships. It can help you recognize patterns and understand your own boundaries better. The goal is not necessarily to erase the memory. The goal is to reach a point where remembering it no longer controls you.And perhaps that is what forgiveness really looks like for many people. Not pretending that nothing happened, not welcoming someone back, and not forcing yourself to feel warm towards them.Sometimes it is simply choosing peace over repeatedly reliving the same hurt.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
