Yash is set to return to the big screen with ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’, nearly four years after the blockbuster success of ‘KGF: Chapter 2’. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the gangster drama is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on August 26, 2026. The film has already generated considerable anticipation, with its combination of Yash’s star power, Geetu Mohandas’ distinctive filmmaking style and an ensemble cast making it one of the most closely watched Indian releases of the year.

    Cast of ‘Toxic’

Toxic features Yash in the central role, with the actor reportedly portraying a dual character setup involving Raya and Rumi/Ticket. Kiara Advani plays Nadia, who is Rumi’s mother, while Nayanthara portrays Ganga, who is described as Raya’s sister. Rukmini Vasanth plays Mellisa, an arms dealer, while Huma Qureshi appears as Elizabeth and Tara Sutaria as Rebecca. The supporting cast also includes Akshay Oberoi as Tony, Sudev Nair as Karmadi and Darrell D’Silva as Salvador. The film marks a major collaboration between Yash and Geetu Mohandas, with the director moving into a large-scale action world after her acclaimed Malayalam films.

    Plot of ‘Toxic’

Set in post-independence Goa, the film follows a gangster caught between loyalty, morality and a search for redemption in a world ruled by violence and envy. Per its official logline, the story leans into an atmospheric setting, hard-hitting action and morally grey characters, ultimately probing what it costs to pursue both love and redemption in the shadow of darkness.

‘Toxic’ gets an A certificate from CBFC

Toxic was originally eyed for a March 19, 2026 release before Middle East tensions pushed it to June 4, and it was eventually rescheduled once more to accommodate international distribution deals. The Central Board of Film Certification has cleared the film with an ‘A’ certificate and a runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes, without asking for any visual cuts. However, the board has directed the makers to mute and swap out two words in the original Kannada version, along with mandatory anti-smoking and anti-drinking disclaimers.

‘Toxic’ runtime is over three hours

At 3 hours and 12 minutes, Toxic is one of the longer theatrical releases of 2026. The extended runtime indicates that Geetu Mohandas has packed the film with a substantial narrative, character arcs and action set pieces.Toxic advance booking points to a strong openingThe early ticket-sales trend has strengthened expectations around Toxic’s opening. The film’s advance booking opened several days ahead of release, with shows quickly filling up in major centres. Mumbai has witnessed particularly strong demand, prompting exhibitors to add early-morning screenings as well as late-night shows.Early indicators suggest a massive opening is on the cards. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, advance bookings alone had crossed 6,34,433 tickets by 9 AM on August 24, translating to a gross of roughly Rs 32.7 crore, a figure that accounts for advance sales only and doesn’t yet factor in spot bookings on release day. Given the scale of the buzz, trade watchers expect the numbers to climb significantly once the film opens.

Yash addresses the controversy around ‘Toxic’

The film has faced considerable discussion online over the depiction of its female characters, particularly following the release of its promotional material and the song ‘Tabaahi’. At a recent pre-release event in Hyderabad, Yash directly addressed the criticism. He argued that the promotional material does not fully represent the film and urged audiences to experience the story before reaching conclusions about its treatment of women.Calling Toxic “bold”, “original”, “ambitious” and “path-breaking”, Yash also highlighted Geetu Mohandas’ role as the film’s director and said there is a significant female perspective within the story. He told the audience that the film has “a voice for women”, suggesting that the context surrounding its female characters will become clearer when viewers watch the complete film.

    Where was ‘Toxic’ filmed?

The production took the team across multiple real-world locations, lending the film an expansive, authentic backdrop. Shooting spanned Bengaluru Palace and the Peenya belt, Mumbai’s Film City and Madh Island, Goa’s Palolem Beach, Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, and Jaipur in Rajasthan.

‘Toxic’ cast fees and Yash’s producer role

Yash is also producing ‘Toxic’ under Monster Mind Creations. According to reports cited in the reference material, he has not charged a separate acting fee for the project. As per a report by Siasat, Kiara Advani is reportedly being paid around Rs 15 crore, while Nayanthara’s reported remuneration is said to fall between Rs 12 crore and Rs 18 crore. Rukmini Vasanth is reportedly earning between Rs 3 crore and Rs 5 crore, with Huma Qureshi and Tara Sutaria also said to have received fees in the Rs 3 crore-Rs 5 crore range.

    ‘Toxic’ box office expectations

As per Sacnilk, ‘Toxic’ had recorded an advance booking gross of around Rs. 26.25 crore across India as of Monday, August 24, with the figure covering tickets sold without block seats. When block seats are included, the reported gross rises to approximately Rs. 34.71 crore. Among the other language versions, the Tamil version has generated around Rs. 63.61 lakh in advance gross, the Malayalam version has crossed Rs. 21.61 lakh, and the Telugu version has recorded around Rs. 15.32 lakh so far, per the same tracker. Sacnilk also notes that ‘Toxic’ is set for a massive worldwide release spanning around 12,000 screens. Trade analysts on the platform believe if Toxic delivers on the scale and intensity promised by its promotional material, it has the potential to go well beyond being a big opener with Yash’s post-‘KGF’ stardom, its fresh massy avatar, strong franchise goodwill, an A-certificate positioning and overseas potential all working in the film’s favour for a major worldwide box-office run. With these numbers still climbing in the final stretch before release, trade watchers expect ‘Toxic’ to post one of the biggest openings of the year once spot bookings are factored in on release day.

    ‘Toxic’ release languages

The film is set to reach audiences across multiple language markets, widening its theatrical footprint beyond its Kannada roots. Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups is scheduled for release in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and English.
