Jeff Skoll, eBay‘s first full-time employee and president, played a crucial role in building the company before leaving after its 1998 public offering. He helped turn an online auction business into one of the defining technology companies of the internet boom, then chose a different path from the one usually associated with billionaires. Today, Forbes estimates his fortune at $5.9 billion, while his charitable Skoll Foundation and Skoll Global Threats Fund have donated about $1.2 billion worldwide over more than two decades. His journey has moved beyond technology, taking him into philanthropy, impact investing and filmmaking. From helping strangers trust one another in online transactions to funding people working on poverty, health and environmental problems, Skoll’s story is ultimately about what happened after the fortune was made and what he decided it should be used for.

How did eBay’s first full-time employee build a $5.9 billion fortune

Jeff Skoll’s path to extraordinary wealth began with a decision he initially doubted. According to Forbes, he met eBay founder Pierre Omidyar while studying for an MBA at Stanford University. When Omidyar approached him about the idea behind the online marketplace, Skoll was far from convinced before realising that Omidyar had spotted an important opportunity. Skoll joined the company during its early years and became its first full-time employee and president. According to ‘Celebrity Net Worth,’ he helped turn the young online auction site into a more organised business by writing its first business plan and developing its operational framework. He also helped establish the feedback system that allowed buyers and sellers to rate one another. At a time when online shopping was still unfamiliar to many people, this helped create trust between strangers carrying out transactions over the internet. The business grew rapidly. Celebrity Net Worth reports that eBay went public in September 1998, with its shares initially priced at $18 each. By April 1999, the company’s market value had climbed to around $25 billion, making both Omidyar and Skoll billionaires.

Leaving eBay marked the start of Jeff Skoll’s mission to drive social change

Skoll eventually stepped away from the company he had helped build. As per Forbes, he left eBay in 2001, three years after its IPO. His departure marked the beginning of a second career focused less on building personal wealth and more on addressing problems around the world. That shift was partly shaped by experiences much earlier in his life. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Skoll’s father developed cancer when Skoll was a teenager and later expressed regret about not having enough time to pursue his dreams. The experience left a lasting impression on Skoll and influenced the way he thought about the purpose of work and wealth. The idea of ‘tikkun olam,’ a Jewish concept often translated as ‘to heal the world,’ also became an important part of his approach. Rather than simply treating his fortune as an end in itself, Skoll began to view it as a resource that could support people attempting to solve difficult social problems.

How Jeff Skoll put billions into social-change projects

In 1999, Skoll established the ‘Skoll Foundation,’ which supports people and organisations working on issues including poverty, education, public health and environmental challenges. Celebrity Net Worth reports that the foundation was an early supporter of social entrepreneurship, an approach centred on finding practical and innovative solutions to major problems. The scale of the effort has grown considerably over time. According to Forbes, the Skoll Foundation and the ‘Skoll Global Threats Fund’ have donated about $1.2 billion around the world during more than 20 years of work. The Skoll Foundation has organised the ‘Skoll World Forum’ since 2004. The gathering brings together people from business, government, philanthropy and civil society to discuss social change and the challenges facing communities worldwide. Skoll later expanded his philanthropic interests through the Skoll Global Threats Fund. As per Celebrity Net Worth, the fund focused on risks including climate change, water security, pandemics and nuclear proliferation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Skoll personally donated more than $120 million to help provide medical equipment and testing supplies to underserved countries.

Skoll expanded his efforts beyond philanthropy through impact investing

Giving money away was not Skoll’s only strategy. Celebrity Net Worth reports that he also became involved in impact investing through ‘Capricorn Investment Group’ and ‘The Rise Fund.’ The aim was to direct money towards businesses that could generate financial returns while also producing measurable social or environmental benefits. This reflected a broader belief that capital could be used in more than one way. Instead of separating philanthropy entirely from business, impact investing attempts to support companies whose work may contribute to improvements in areas such as healthcare, education or environmental sustainability. Skoll also publicly joined the ‘Giving Pledge,’ committing to give away the majority of his wealth during his lifetime.

Skoll used filmmaking to raise awareness of major social issues

Skoll’s interest in influencing society eventually took him to Hollywood. In 2004, he founded ‘Participant Media,’ a production company built around films and television projects intended to entertain audiences while drawing attention to important issues. Films associated with Participant Media include ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ ‘The Help,’ ‘Lincoln,’ ‘Spotlight,’ ‘Roma’ and ‘American Factory.’ The company demonstrated Skoll’s belief that storytelling could sometimes reach people in ways that reports, conferences and traditional campaigns could not.According to Forbes, Skoll announced in 2024 that Participant Media would close after two decades of operation. Today, Skoll’s $5.9 billion fortune is a reminder of the wealth created during the rise of the internet. But the $1.2 billion donated by his charitable organisations tells that Skoll chose to spend much of the following decades trying to turn wealth, investment and storytelling into tools for wider social change.
