Georgia O’Keeffe bought a small Ghost Ranch home in 1940 and spent decades painting the surrounding desert; a conservation plan is now protecting 6,000 acres from development

Georgia O'Keeffe bought a small Ghost Ranch home in 1940 and spent decades painting the surrounding desert; a conservation plan is now protecting 6,000 acres from development
For the unversed, Ghost Ranch sits amid the dramatic red and yellow cliffs of the Piedra Lumbre, about 65 miles northwest of Santa Fe along U.S. 84. The region became closely associated with O’Keeffe, whose paintings transformed its cliffs, mesas, bones and expansive skies into some of the most recognizable images in American art.

Long before the desert landscapes of Northern New Mexico became icons of American art, they were simply a vast meeting of red cliffs, golden mesas, open skies and rugged wilderness. For artist Georgia O’Keeffe, that landscape became both a home and a source of inspiration. Now, decades after she first made Ghost Ranch part of her life, a new conservation effort is working to ensure the scenery that shaped her art remains largely unchanged for generations to come. The National Ghost Ranch Foundation and the Presbyterian Foundation announced a partnership with the State of New Mexico and the New Mexico Land Conservancy in 2025 to protect approximately 6,000 acres surrounding Ghost Ranch. According to a report by Presbyterian Foundation, under the Ghost Ranch Conservation Plan, the land, water and wildlife habitat are being protected through conservation easements. These voluntary agreements safeguard land for conservation purposes while allowing its owners to retain ownership, the report states. The goal has been not only to protect the area’s natural beauty but also to ensure Ghost Ranch can continue operating its educational and retreat programs sustainably for years to come.

A legacy supported by public funding

The first phase of the conservation effort received $930,000 from New Mexico’s Natural Heritage Conservation Act Program through the Energy, Minerals & Natural Resources Department. The funding came from the Land of Enchantment Legacy Fund, a state initiative supporting land and water conservation, agriculture and outdoor recreation. According to the report, the money helped cover transaction costs associated with establishing the conservation easements. The New Mexico Land Conservancy helped held the easements in trust for public benefit and traditional land users, working with the Presbyterian Foundation, the National Ghost Ranch Foundation and the State of New Mexico.

    Preserving the Ghost Ranch experience

According to the same report, the conservation plan is designed to protect the surrounding landscape without changing the core visitor experience. The easements is said to not cover the 550 acres containing Ghost Ranch’s main facilities, including its visitor center, trails, lodging, stables and museums. That distinction means the thousands of people who visit Ghost Ranch each year can continue to explore and experience the site while the larger surrounding landscape receives long-term protection from development. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has called the initiative an opportunity to preserve the vistas that attracted O’Keeffe to the region and continue to define Northern New Mexico’s distinctive character.

    The landscape behind O’Keeffe’s Art

For the unversed, Ghost Ranch sits amid the dramatic red and yellow cliffs of the Piedra Lumbre, about 65 miles northwest of Santa Fe along U.S. 84. The region became closely associated with O’Keeffe, whose paintings transformed its cliffs, mesas, bones and expansive skies into some of the most recognizable images in American art.O’Keeffe bought a small house and seven acres at Ghost Ranch in 1940 and also maintained a larger home and studio in nearby Abiquiú. Those properties are now separately owned and managed by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. While the new conservation plan does not directly protect those properties, it preserves many of the landscapes that inspired her work, including views toward Abiquiú Lake, the Rio Chama and Cerro Pedernal, known in Tewa as Tsip’in.

    A vision that continues

Ghost Ranch’s conservation story stretches back generations. Arthur and Phoebe Pack donated the land in 1955 to the Board of Christian Education, now part of the Presbyterian Foundation. Their vision was to preserve Ghost Ranch as an educational and retreat center while protecting its surrounding lands. The new conservation plan carries that vision forward. By bringing government agencies, nonprofit organizations and landowners together, the partnership aims to ensure that the landscape O’Keeffe found so compelling remains a place of nature, culture, learning and inspiration, rather than becoming another developed piece of the American West.Images Courtesy: Wikipedia and Presbyterian Foundation
