If your dog takes over half your bed, your cat curls up near your pillow, or your pet refuses to sleep anywhere but beside you, you may have heard someone say that you are “too attached” to your animal. But sharing your bed with a pet does not automatically mean that something is wrong with you. Psychology and research on the human-animal bond suggest that pets can become important sources of comfort, companionship, and emotional security. For some people, having a familiar pet nearby at night can simply make them feel calm and safe.
Your pet can feel like a safe presence
For many people, bedtime is when the mind finally becomes quiet enough for worries and stress to surface. Having a familiar animal nearby can create a feeling of comfort and routine. Research on pet attachment has found that some owners develop genuine attachment bonds with their dogs and may turn to them for comfort during emotionally difficult moments. Dogs can also use their owners as a “secure base,” meaning their presence can help them feel safe enough to explore their surroundings. This does not mean a person is unable to form healthy relationships with other people. A close bond with a pet can exist alongside friendships, family relationships, and romantic relationships. In fact, research has found that people can experience pets as supportive parts of their lives, with some studies linking the presence of pets to lower cardiovascular responses during stressful situations.
Why sleeping beside a pet can feel comforting
There is something deeply familiar about having your pet beside you at the end of the day. You know their breathing, their little movements, and their usual sleeping routine. That familiarity can make the bedroom feel warmer and more secure. Mayo Clinic research has also found that many pet owners feel comfort and a sense of security when their pets are nearby at night. For someone who lives alone, has had a stressful day or simply enjoys the companionship of their animal, that presence can be emotionally meaningful. So, sleeping beside your pet should not automatically be labelled as loneliness or emotional dependence.
But emotional comfort does not always mean better sleep
There is an important difference between feeling emotionally comforted and sleeping better. A 2024 study published in Scientific Reports looked at 1,591 American adults, including 758 people who slept with their pets. The researchers found that people who co-slept with pets reported poorer sleep quality and more severe insomnia symptoms. They also found no evidence that sleeping with a pet protected people from the effects of stress on sleep.This does not mean pets are bad for sleep. Your experience may depend on your pet, your sleeping habits, and how much space the animal takes up. A restless dog, a cat that moves around at night, or multiple pets on the bed may affect sleep differently from a calm animal that sleeps quietly beside you. Interestingly, the 2024 study’s exploratory analysis found poorer sleep outcomes linked to sleeping with dogs, while cat co-sleeping was not linked to the same pattern. However, the researchers said these findings were exploratory and should not be treated as final conclusions.
Sleeping with your pet is not a psychological red flag
The idea that people who sleep with their pets must be lonely, anxious, or unable to maintain human relationships is too simple. Human-pet relationships can be genuine attachment relationships. A pet can provide companionship, comfort, and a sense of safety without replacing the people in your life. What matters is whether the arrangement works for both you and your pet. If you sleep peacefully, wake up rested, and enjoy having your pet nearby, there may be no reason to feel embarrassed about it. But if your pet regularly wakes you up, affects your sleep, or makes it difficult to maintain a healthy routine, changing the sleeping arrangement may be worth considering. At the end of the day, sometimes your pet is not in your bed because you are emotionally dependent on them. They are there because their presence makes home feel a little safer, calmer, and more like home.
