5 smart hacks to keep rodents out of your house: Simple ways to prevent mice and rats from entering your home
Simple ways to prevent mice and rats from entering your home

Few things unsettle a household quite like spotting a rat or mouse darting across the kitchen floor at night, and if you’ve ever heard that telltale scratching sound inside a wall or ceiling, you already know how quickly a single sighting can spiral into genuine anxiety about a bigger infestation. Rodents are drawn to homes for the same basic reasons every pest is: warmth, food, water, and safe places to hide and nest, which means keeping them out is largely about removing what attracts them in the first place. Here are five genuinely effective hacks to keep rats and mice from making themselves at home.

Seal every gap with steel wool

This is, without question, the single most effective step you can take, and pest control experts consistently rank it above every other method. Mice can squeeze through gaps as small as a coin, and if their head fits through an opening, the rest of their body will follow. Walk around your home checking for cracks near pipes, gaps under doors, holes around utility lines, and openings in skirting boards, then pack them tightly with steel wool, finishing with caulk for extra hold. Rodents can chew through foam, plastic, and even wood, but their teeth simply can’t get through metal.

Use peppermint oil as a natural deterrent

Peppermint’s strong scent is genuinely disorienting to rodents, who navigate largely by smell, making it one of the most reliably cited natural repellents. Soak a few cotton balls in peppermint essential oil and place them near likely entry points, along baseboards, near pipes, or inside cabinets, replacing them every couple of weeks as the scent fades. It’s a pleasant-smelling, pet- and child-safe option that doubles as a mild home deodoriser while it works.

Cut off access to food and water

Rodents won’t stick around a space that doesn’t reliably offer them something to eat or drink. Store all food, including pet food, in airtight containers rather than open bags or boxes, wipe down counters and stovetops after cooking, and avoid leaving dishes, crumbs, or pet food bowls out overnight. Fixing any leaking taps or pipes matters too, since a steady water source is just as appealing to a rodent as an easy meal.

Declutter storage areas and trim outdoor growth

Cluttered garages, storerooms, and even overstuffed cupboards make ideal, undisturbed nesting spots for rodents looking for shelter. Keep storage areas tidy, elevate boxes and bags off the floor where possible, and avoid letting stacks of newspaper, cardboard, or old fabric pile up unchecked. Outdoors, trim back overgrown vegetation and grass close to the house, since dense growth right against a wall gives rodents cover to approach undetected.

Try ammonia-soaked cotton balls near entry points

Some pest control sources point to ammonia as an effective rodent deterrent, since its sharp smell reportedly mimics the scent of predator urine, something rodents instinctively want to avoid. Soak cotton balls in ammonia and place them near suspected entry points or areas of activity, keeping in mind the smell is genuinely strong and unpleasant for humans too, so it’s best used in less-frequented areas like garages, basements, or storage spaces rather than living areas.

Rodents can carry disease and cause structural damage, so if you notice signs of an active or ongoing infestation, droppings, gnaw marks, or repeated sightings, consult a licensed pest control professional.
