iPhone 17 Pro gets a “Jugaad” makeover in India to look like iPhone 18 Pro and internet can’t stop laughing |

iPhone 17 Pro gets a “Jugaad” makeover in India to look like iPhone 18 Pro and internet can’t stop laughing

Why spend a fortune on the latest iPhone when a trip to the local repair shop can apparently give your old one a brand-new personality? Well, that’s not what we are saying but a bunch of smartphone users. The internet is having a field day after a video showed an iPhone 17 Pro being transformed to look like an iPhone 18 Pro – and, naturally, the first word that came to mind for many Indians was jugaad. The video, which has been doing the rounds on X, shows a repair shop worker giving the older iPhone a rather dramatic makeover. The phone is cleaned, its back panel is removed and replaced with a Burgundy-coloured panel, before a matching frame is fitted around it.And just like that, the iPhone 17 Pro suddenly looks suspiciously like its newer sibling. No waiting for a delivery. No standing in a launch-day queue. No crying over the price.Just a repair shop and some good old Indian jugaad.

‘iPhone 18 Pro’ at a fraction of the effort?

The clip was shared with a caption claiming that conversion kits for the new look had already started appearing in Indian markets. The logic was pretty simple: if someone mostly wants the new phone because it looks different, why not just make the old one look the part?Of course, there’s a rather large catch.Changing the back panel and frame doesn’t magically turn an iPhone 17 Pro into an iPhone 18 Pro. The internals, processor, cameras and other hardware remain those of the older phone. But that’s exactly what made the internet’s reaction so entertaining.People weren’t necessarily debating smartphone specifications. They were debating the sheer audacity of the jugaad.

    ‘Jugaad Pradhan Desh’

Once the video started spreading, social media users quickly turned it into a meme. One person wrote, “Indians & their jugaad.”Another simply summed up the whole situation with: “Jugaad Pradhan desh hai Bharat.”And honestly, it’s hard to argue with the creativity.India has a long-standing relationship with finding an alternative when the straightforward solution is too expensive, too complicated or simply unnecessary.Need something fixed? There’s a jugaad.Need something to work differently from how it was designed? There’s probably a jugaad for that too.And now, apparently, there’s a jugaad for making last year’s iPhone look like this year’s.But not everyone was impressed. Some users questioned what the point of the makeover actually was.One person asked, “What’s the point of this gimmick?”Another took a swipe at people who care more about looking like they own the latest iPhone than actually having its technology. And then came the bluntest reaction of all:“Never fell for that one!”New iPhone, same old phone? The timing of the video is what makes it even funnier.Apple has just unveiled its latest iPhones, including the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the new models naturally come with the usual excitement around upgraded hardware and design.According to Apple, the Pro models bring upgrades including the A20 Pro chip, a 48MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture and improved battery life. So, underneath all that Burgundy-panel magic, an iPhone 17 Pro is still an iPhone 17 Pro.But from across the room?Well, that’s a different story. And perhaps that’s the whole appeal of this particular jugaad. For someone who desperately wants the latest-looking phone but doesn’t necessarily want to spend the money on a new one, changing the exterior might seem like a clever shortcut. For someone who actually wants the latest hardware, though, no amount of Burgundy paint is going to give an older phone a new processor.Still, you have to admire the confidence.Apple: Here is our latest flagship.Indian repair shop: Hold my screwdriver. The result may not technically be an iPhone 18 Pro, but it certainly looks like someone wasn’t ready to let their iPhone 17 Pro feel outdated just yet.

    And the internet?

It got exactly what it loves most – a little technology, a little jugaad and a lot of jokes.Because in a country where jugaad has practically become an unofficial life skill, turning an old-looking iPhone into a new-looking iPhone was probably only a matter of time.Disclaimer: We don’t encourage or recommend these kinds of cheap or unofficial modifications. Altering a smartphone’s exterior can potentially affect its build, durability, resale value or warranty. If you want the latest gadget, it’s always best to buy the genuine model rather than trying to make an older one look like it.
