In 1992, Elton John began buying Atlanta apartments and eventually combined six into a 13,000-square-foot home; three decades later, it sold for $7.225 million

Sir Elton John’s long-time Atlanta home, created over more than 30 years by combining six separate apartments, has sold for $7.225 million (£5.9 million). The final price was more than $2.2 million above the original asking price, after a short bidding period for the high-rise property. Located on the 36th floor of the Park Place tower in Atlanta’s Buckhead district, the 13,332-square-foot residence was John’s main North American home during his touring years. The Wall Street Journal first reported the sale, saying the property was listed in September for $4.995 million and sold about six weeks later in an all-cash deal.

    Strategic listing creates competition

The property went on the market after John finished his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. Chase Mizell, the listing agent from Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, told The Wall Street Journal that the home was deliberately priced below its expected market value to attract several offers. “We had a ton of interest right out of the gate,” Mizell told the newspaper. “We strategically underpriced it so the price would go up, rather than list for an ambitious price and potentially have it sit on the market.” Mizell also confirmed to local news outlets that the buyer was a local resident whose identity was not revealed. The buyer paid entirely in cash, with real estate agent Betsy Akers representing them during the negotiations.

    Home expanded over 30 years

John first bought a home in the Buckhead high-rise in 1992. According to property history published by Architectural Digest, he paid $925,000 for a two-storey duplex measuring about 2,500 square feet. Over the next 30 years, he bought five more neighboring apartments on the 36th floor as they became available. The combined property eventually became a huge 13,332-square-foot sky mansion. The separate apartments were connected through major structural work, creating large galleries, high ceilings, and custom living spaces. According to details from Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, the home has four bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and three partial bathrooms. The sale also included nine reserved parking spaces, six private storage rooms, and five individual wine storage units inside the building.

    Custom interiors designed for art

The interiors were specially designed to display John’s large collection of fine art and photography. At the center of the residence is a two-storey formal dining room, with upper-level gallery walkways overlooking it. According to Architectural Digest’s floor plan, the main bedroom suite has floor-to-ceiling mirrors, light-colored hardwood floors, and an onyx-lined bathroom. The main dressing area includes a custom walk-in wardrobe and its own private balcony. The home also includes a private gym, a separate massage room, and an in-home spa. Large double-height windows surround the outside of the residence, providing wide views of the Midtown, Downtown, and Buckhead skylines.

    Connection to the Atlanta community

John first chose Atlanta as a regional base in the early 1990s because of its convenient airport and the warm welcome he received from local residents. In an earlier interview with The Wall Street Journal, John said the city gave him a calm and familiar environment during an important period of personal recovery. “The only people I knew were real people, who had normal jobs,” John told the publication. “The city adopted me and I adopted it.” His home in the 40-story Park Place building also became connected to his charitable work in the region. This included the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which established its operational headquarters in Atlanta.

End of North American tour base

The sale comes after John’s retirement from major world touring. His final Atlanta concert took place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in September 2022 as part of his multi-year farewell tour. According to Atlanta Agent Magazine, the contents of the home, including vintage furniture, stage costumes, and major artworks, were packed up and removed before the property was listed. Some items from the home were later sold at auction through Christie’s in New York in early 2024. John now lives mainly in the United Kingdom with his husband, David Furnish, and their two children. The sale completes the transfer of the largest residential space in the Park Place tower.
