In the late 1980s, two explorers paddled the full length of the Amazon after walking its first 200 miles; they reached the Atlantic after a 4,200-mile journey

In the late 1980s, Polish explorer Piotr Chmielinski and American writer Joe Kane became the first people to paddle the full length of the Amazon from its source area to the Atlantic Ocean. Kane first walked 200 miles before joining the paddling journey. The expedition covered about 4,200 miles from the high-altitude headwaters to the sea and became a demanding test of endurance. The team faced dangerous rapids, altitude sickness, armed groups, difficult jungle conditions, and internal disputes. Only four of the original 11 members reached the Atlantic, and Kane and Chmielinski travelled nearly all of the river by boat, carrying their craft over land when the water became impossible to navigate.

How Kane and Chmielinski travelled the Amazon by boat

Guinness World Records identifies Piotr Chmielinski of Poland and Joe Kane of the United States as the first people to paddle the full length of the Amazon from its source area to the Atlantic. According to the record, the journey was completed in the late 1980s, with Kane walking the first 200 miles before joining the paddling expedition to Belem, Brazil. The explorers used kayaks for almost the entire route, switching to a raft for some of the rougher rapids. Other members of the expedition also joined them on the river. The expedition was the first to travel the length of the world’s longest river, covering about 4,200 miles from source to sea. Its account says Kane and Chmielinski travelled nearly the entire distance by boat.

The long and difficult journey through the Andes

The journey began in the icy, high-altitude headwaters of the Amazon, where the 11-member team faced conditions that made the expedition difficult. The explorers included South Africans, Britons, Poles and Americans. They dealt with altitude sickness in the Andes and increasingly dangerous river rapids. In the eastern Andes, progress was especially slow. The expedition sometimes managed only 500 yards in a day despite long hours and serious risks. After three months, the group had travelled only 600 miles and was still in Peru. They still had 1,600 miles to cover before reaching Brazil and another 2,000 miles before the Atlantic. As per the Los Angeles Times, Kane and Chmielinski continued paddling, sometimes making 50 strokes a minute and 36,000 strokes a day, while navigating the waters.

What threats and conflicts challenged the Amazon expedition

The expedition became harder as the group faced new threats and disagreements grew within the team. The Los Angeles Times reported that the explorers encountered Maoist guerrillas at a bend in the river, were confronted by Peruvian soldiers downstream, and later came across armed cocaine traffickers.Personal rivalries eventually led to an open mutiny, reducing the original 11-member party to just four before the group reached the Atlantic. Kane and Chmielinski travelled nearly the entire Amazon by boat, carrying their craft over land whenever the river became too difficult to travel by boat. British doctor Kate Durrant and Polish photographer Zbyszek Bzdak also completed the journey, but they travelled much of the route by land while bringing supplies.

Kane and Chmielinski reached the Atlantic after months of paddling

After months of difficult travel, Kane and Chmielinski finally reached the Atlantic Ocean, marking the end of their journey along the Amazon. When they reached the sea, they tasted the salt water and were soon taken to the United States after contacting a morning news programme from Belem. It also confirms that Kane walked the first 200 miles before joining the paddling journey.
