For many travellers, the idea of adventure begins with a destination, a far away mountain or an unexplored beach, an unfamiliar city or a long road journey. But for Helen Keller, travelling anywhere was an adventure. For her, it was never simply about reaching a new place. Travelling for Keller was more about facing changes, stepping out of her comfort zone and opening to what the world had to offer. Her famous quote,“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing” reveals a lot about her personality. She wrote this in Let Us Have Faith, published in 1940. The passage was later reprinted in The Open Door. The words become even more striking when viewed against Keller’s own life.Keller was blind and deaf

Keller lost her eyesight and hearing power to an illness when she was just a kid. Yet she went on to study at Radcliffe College and became the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later became a writer, lecturer and advocate, working for decades with organisations supporting people with vision loss.A travellerKeller was an ardent traveller. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, between 1946 and 1957 she went on exploring over 35 countries across five continents on seven overseas tours. On her tours, she would meet political leaders and visit communities. In 1930, Keller visited Scotland, Ireland and England. Then she visited Japan in 1937 and continued travelling internationally in the years that followed. After World War II, her journeys expanded considerably as she worked internationally for the blind.Journey beyond

An adventurous journey does not always mean climbing a mountain peak or crossing an ocean. Sometimes adventure begins with choosing the unfamiliar route. It can mean taking a train to a town you have never been to, or speaking to local people or just travelling solo for the first time.Travel naturally brings uncertainty. Flights can be delayed, roads can change, weather can disrupt plans. Yet these are often the moments that become part of the story we remember.Keller’s original passage also puts the word security at the centre of the idea. She wrote about security as something people often assume they can rely on, before arguing that avoiding danger is not necessarily safer in the long run. Her message was about facing change rather than allowing fear to determine the shape of one’s life. Why her words resonate with travellers today

There is also a deeper reason Keller’s words continue to resonate with travel. Travelling changes the relationship we have with the familiar. A place that looks far on a map becomes a street, a landscape, a conversation or a memory.Keller’s own travels were not undertaken simply for leisure. They gave her a platform to meet people and draw attention to the experiences and rights of people with disabilities around the world. The American Foundation for the Blind records that she visited 35 countries on five continents during her major post-war international tours.Perhaps that is the most interesting and fascinating travel lesson hidden inside her famous quote. Adventure does not necessarily mean chasing danger; it can simply mean choosing curiosity over routine, experience over assumption and movement over fear. And sometimes, the journey becomes much bigger than the destination. For anyone planning a trip, Keller’s words offer a simple thought to carry along: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
