'Hanuman Ansh' director didn't take fees before release, will now get Rs 50 crore as the film inspired by Neem Karoli Baba's life crosses Rs 360 crore

‘Hanuman Ansh’ has turned out to be one of the biggest surprise successes of 2026. The film, which has now completed seven weeks in theatres, continues to draw audiences and is expected to remain on the big screen for a few more weeks. The film has also emerged as the third biggest hit of the year after ‘Dhurandhar 2’ and ‘Border 2’.The film’s modest budget has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding its success. Producer Anupriya Nagar recently revealed that ‘Hanuman Ansh’ was made for a little over Rs 1.5 crore, with Rs 50 lakh coming from her own pocket. She also revealed that director Vishal Chaturvedi did not charge a fee while making the film. Instead, the profits will be shared equally among the three producers and the director.Anupriya revealed in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, “I put in one-third of the entire budget. I put Rs 50 lakh in the film, and the budget was a little over Rs 1.5 crore.”According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film has earned Rs 366.45 crore gross in its first 47 days. Asked how much of the profits she would take home, Anupriya explained, “I will get one-fourth of the profits. First, the distributor will take their cut. Then we also pay for other expenses and pay taxes. Then whatever is left will be divided among the four of us.”With the film’s theatrical performance far exceeding expectations, Anupriya estimates that her individual returns could touch Rs 50 crore. However, she pointed out that the makers are yet to monetise the film through its OTT, satellite and music rights.“So far, it seems like I will be making Rs 50 crore. But all of this is theoretical. We are yet to make an OTT, music and satellite deal,” she said. For Anupriya, the unexpected windfall also comes with a sense of responsibility. Asked what she plans to do with the money, she said, “I don’t even know how to handle this kind of money so I think the best way to go about it is to give back to society.”She also revealed plans to launch her own production house and back more stories, particularly regional films and web series. However, she intends to stick to the low-budget model that worked for ‘Hanuman Ansh’.“I want to make films on small budgets because I know that Hanuman Ansh became possible only because of its small budget. If my budget was too big, I don’t think it would have turned out this way. I want to make sure that I save a certain percentage of money for my production house,” she said.Anupriya also spoke about Vishal Chaturvedi’s long journey with the project. According to her, the filmmaker had been trying to bring the story to audiences for nearly 14 years and had previously approached several OTT platforms.“He had narrated this to many OTT platforms. Ragini Sona and Namrata Singh (co-producers) were the ones who showed faith in the film and said let’s make it,” she said.Anupriya joined the project during post-production, when the team needed additional funds. She said the entire team had faith in Vishal despite ‘Hanuman Ansh’ being his directorial debut.“All of us had faith in Vishal. He is a first-time director and I am glad he got that break. What beautiful direction and script he has written,” she said. She further revealed that Vishal chose not to take a fee during the making of the film because of its limited budget. However, since he is also an equal partner in the company, he will share the profits along with the producers.“Our budget was very minimal, so he said that he won’t take any fee during the making. But in the company, we are all equal partners, so if we are doing well, then the four of us will be doing well,” she said.‘Hanuman Ansh’ is yet to finalise an OTT deal, while its satellite and music deals are also still pending.
