Is it safe to travel to Bangkok in Thailand right now? Latest flood alert for tourists

Thailand is witnessing another spell of heavy rain and disturbed weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD)has warned of thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail and heavy to very heavy rainfall across several regions. The latest TMD advisory, issued on October 6, 2026, warns that accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods, overflowing waterways and landslides. This is an important update for tourists as Thailand is one of the fav countries to visit for travellers from across the globe. This doesn’t mean the entire country is closed to tourists; but it does mean that weather conditions need to be checked before and during the trip.Which parts of Thailand are affected? As per latest TMD forecast, unsettled weather is affecting parts of northern, central and eastern Thailand, as well as the South. Bangkok and its surrounding areas are also under a weather watch. The TMD’s seven-day forecast for October 6–12 says that during October 6–8, thunderstorms with gusty winds, hail and heavy rain are expected in the North, Central Thailand including Bangkok and its vicinity, and the East. The South is expected to see scattered to fairly widespread thunderstorms, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain.Bangkok’s forecastBangkok’s forecast is particularly relevant for international tourists. The TMD expects scattered to fairly widespread thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain with gusty winds on October 6, while isolated very heavy rain is possible in the capital on October 10–11.Is Bangkok safe for tourists?

There is no current official indication of a nationwide tourism shutdown. However, travellers in Bangkok should be prepared for temporary waterlogging, traffic disruption and longer journey times because of heavy rain.Thailand’s government said on October 5 that rainfall was expected across the North, Central Thailand, Bangkok and its surrounding areas, the East and upper South. It also said that the authorities were continuing to monitor water management and flood risks.Conditions can change quickly because of intense rainfall. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has previously advised travellers affected by heavy rain in Bangkok and surrounding areas to allow extra time when travelling to airports, transport hubs and other destinations. What about Phuket, Krabi and other beach destinations?

The TMD’s latest forecast says the southern East Coast and West Coast can expect scattered to fairly widespread thunderstorms and isolated heavy to very heavy rain through October 12.From Phuket northwards, waves are expected to be around 1 metre but can exceed 2 metres during thunderstorms. Similar conditions are forecast in parts of the Gulf of Thailand. The department has therefore advised ships to proceed with caution and stay away from thunderstorms. For tourists, this means boat trips, island-hopping excursions and other marine activities may need to be changed or cancelled depending on local conditions. Travellers should check with their operators before setting out rather than relying on a fixed itinerary.More rain is forecast after October 9The TMD’s latest advisory mentions another spell of rain is expected from October 9 to 13, particularly across the East, Central Thailand including Bangkok and its vicinity, and the South. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible during this period.Should tourists cancel their Thailand trip?Based on the latest official information, there is no blanket instruction to cancel travel to Thailand. The more important consideration is the destination and timing of the trip.A traveller visiting Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai or another major tourist destination should check the latest local weather and transport situation before leaving for the day. What should tourists do during the alert?

Passengers search their delayed baggage from Thai Airways flights at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, after heavy rain and flooding disrupted the airline’s ground operations, in Bangkok, Thailand

Tourists flying out of Thailand should allow additional time for airport journeys if heavy rain is affecting Bangkok or other urban areas.TAT has advised visitors to check road and weather conditions before setting out and has activated its 1672 Tourist Hotline for assistance.Tourist Police can be reached at 1155.While Thailand remains open to tourists, travellers should exercise caution because of the current heavy-rain and flash-flood risk.
