In 1997, just 500 hardcover copies of the first Harry Potter book were printed, most for libraries; 29 years later, one surviving first edition with the original printing errors sold for $400,000 in Dallas
The book sold on October 14, 2026, at its Rare Books Signature Auction in Dallas, Texas.

When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in 1997, only 500 hardcover copies were printed. Most were intended for libraries, where children could borrow and read them. Nearly three decades later, one of those early copies fetched $400,000 at auction, helped by its rarity and the printing errors preserved in its pages and cover.According to American auction house Heritage Auctions, the book sold on October 14, 2026, at its Rare Books Signature Auction in Dallas, Texas. The final price of $400,000 included the buyer’s premium. The winning bid before the premium was $320,000, making the book one of the most expensive copies of Rowling’s debut novel to sell at auction. Heritage said it achieved the second-highest auction price for the title, behind a copy that sold for $471,000 in December 2021.

Why this first edition is so rare

The book was published by Bloomsbury in the UK in 1997, with cover illustrations by Thomas Taylor. Although 5,650 hardcover and paperback copies were printed for the first edition, the hardcover version was far scarcer: just 500 copies were produced in that binding. As reported by The Independent, 300 of the 500 hardcovers went to schools and libraries, while the remaining 200 were distributed to friends, reviewers and other contacts. Their original purpose was to put the story into readers’ hands, rather than to create a collectible edition.

The copy sold in Dallas retained the identifying features of the first printing. These include a list of school supplies on page 53 in which “1 wand” appears twice. The copyright page also gives the author’s name as “Joanne Rowling”, rather than the familiar “J.K. Rowling”. There are errors on the rear cover, too. The word “Philosopher’s” is misspelled as “Philospher’s”, missing an “o”. The book’s copyright page also has no space between “Taylor” and “1997”.These details help identify the first printing and distinguish it from later editions. In this case, the book retained the original pictorial boards and was housed in a custom clamshell case made by the Chelsea Bindery, according to Heritage Auctions. As per the official website of the auction house, the copy was in very good condition, with some rubbing at the spine ends and corners, minor scratches on the rear board and lightly browned pages. Despite these signs of age, the book remained an example of the scarce original hardcover edition.

A $400,000 sale, but not the auction record

The copy attracted strong bidding before reaching its final price. According to the New York Post, the sale followed a four-minute bidding contest. Its final price, including the buyer’s premium, was $400,000. That figure is substantial, but it did not break the auction record for the title. Heritage Auctions established the current record in December 2021, when another copy sold for $471,000.The latest sale also came as a new screen adaptation of the Harry Potter story is scheduled to arrive. The new ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026.
