From sale traps to hidden fees: 5 online shopping mistakes that could cost you money
5 online shopping mistakes that could cost you money

You open a shopping app to buy one thing and somehow end up with five items in your cart. The discounts look tempting, the products look great, and before you know it, you have spent more than you planned. Online shopping is convenient, but a few common mistakes can make it more expensive than it needs to be. Here are five things to watch out for.

Buying something just because it is on sale

A 50% discount can make almost anything look worth buying. But if you didn’t need the product in the first place, you haven’t really saved money. Before placing an order, ask yourself whether you would still buy it without the discount. If the answer is no, you may be better off skipping it.

Ignoring delivery charges and extra fees

A product may look cheaper on one website than another, but the final bill can tell a different story. Delivery charges, platform fees and other costs can increase the total amount. Always check the final price at checkout before deciding which website offers the better deal.

Not checking product details and reviews

Ever ordered something online that looked completely different in size or quality when it arrived? Product photographs can be misleading, especially when there is no clear reference for size. Check measurements, size charts and product specifications before buying. Read a few recent customer reviews too, particularly those that mention problems with quality or how the product works.

Forgetting to read the return policy

It is easy to assume that you can return anything that doesn’t work out. But some products may not be eligible for returns, while others may qualify only for replacement. Before buying, check the return window and refund conditions. This is particularly important for expensive electronics, discounted items and products you have never purchased before.

Falling for deals that are too good to be true

A popular product being sold at an unbelievably low price can be tempting. But it could also be a warning sign of counterfeit goods or an unreliable seller. Check the seller’s details, independent reviews and return policy before paying. Also, read the conditions of bank offers and coupons instead of assuming every advertised discount will apply to your order.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
