Psychology explains why some couples can sit together in silence without feeling awkward while others need constant conversation; what this means about emotional security, intimacy and relationship expectations

A couple can spend an entire evening sitting together without saying much, yet feel completely connected. Another couple might experience the same silence as uncomfortable, wondering whether something is wrong or whether their partner has lost interest. This difference is not necessarily about how much two people love each other. Psychology suggests that the meaning behind silence, along with each partner’s emotional needs and expectations, can shape how comfortable they feel together.A study published in the journal Motivation and Emotion in 2024 examined silence in romantic relationships across four studies. Researchers explored how the reasons behind these quiet moments influenced people’s emotions, psychological needs and feelings of closeness. The findings suggest that silence can strengthen a relationship when it is freely chosen and enjoyed but can create discomfort when it comes from anxiety, pressure or hostility.

When silence becomes a sign of emotional security

In the early stages of a relationship, conversations often help two people learn about each other. Partners ask questions, share stories and look for common interests. As familiarity grows, however, they may no longer feel the need to fill every moment with words. For some couples, sitting together quietly becomes a natural part of being close. One person might read a book while the other listens to music, or both might relax after a long day without feeling obliged to start a conversation.Such moments can reflect emotional security. Partners feel comfortable enough to be themselves without worrying that every pause will be misunderstood. They do not need to entertain each other constantly or prove their affection through continuous conversation. The 2024 study found that silence motivated by a genuine desire to be close was associated with more positive feelings and stronger relationship closeness. These moments were often linked to calm, peaceful emotions rather than excitement. However, comfortable silence is not a universal measure of a successful relationship. Some couples express closeness through frequent conversation, humour and sharing everyday details. Others enjoy spending time together with fewer words. Neither pattern is automatically better than the other.

Why some people feel the need to keep talking

Why some people feel the need to keep talking

Not everyone experiences silence in the same way. For some people, conversation is an important way of feeling connected, reassured and included in their partner’s life. When the conversation suddenly stops, they may wonder whether their partner is upset, distracted or emotionally distant. They might begin asking questions simply to restore a sense of connection. Personal communication habits, past experiences and expectations about relationships can all influence these reactions. Someone who values regular verbal reassurance may interpret silence differently from a partner who feels loved through physical presence or practical support. This does not necessarily mean that the more talkative partner is insecure or that the quieter partner is emotionally mature. It simply shows that people can have different ways of experiencing intimacy. The important question is whether both partners feel understood. If one person needs conversation to feel connected while the other prefers quiet time, acknowledging these differences can help prevent unnecessary misunderstandings.

Not all silence means the same thing

While comfortable silence can bring partners closer, quietness can also signal an unresolved problem. The difference often lies in the reason for staying silent and the feelings surrounding it. The researchers distinguished between silence that comes naturally from a desire for closeness and silence driven by internal pressure or external motives, such as wanting to punish or shut out a partner. For example, a couple relaxing together without speaking may feel peaceful and connected. In contrast, one partner refusing to respond after an argument to make the other feel guilty can create emotional distance.Silence can also occur when someone is afraid to express an opinion because they expect criticism, rejection or conflict. In such cases, the absence of conversation may reflect discomfort rather than security. The study linked anxiety-driven and hostile forms of silence with less positive emotions and poorer relationship experiences. This highlights why the number of words exchanged is not enough to judge the health of a relationship. A quiet evening does not automatically mean something is wrong, just as constant conversation does not guarantee emotional closeness. The surrounding circumstances and each partner’s experience matter.

How couples can understand each other better

Partners do not have to share identical communication styles to build a strong relationship. What matters is making room for both people’s needs without treating their differences as evidence that something is wrong. If one partner enjoys quiet time while the other prefers talking, they can discuss what helps each of them feel connected. A simple conversation about whether silence feels relaxing or uncomfortable can prevent assumptions from turning into resentment. It is equally important to recognise when quietness follows an argument or becomes a repeated way of avoiding difficult conversations. Taking time to calm down can be helpful, but explaining the need for space and returning to the discussion later can reassure both partners. Ultimately, intimacy is not measured by how often a couple speaks. It can develop through meaningful conversations, shared activities, attentive listening and peaceful moments together. The most useful distinction is whether silence feels freely chosen and comfortable or whether it leaves one or both partners feeling ignored, anxious or unable to speak honestly. When couples understand what their silence means to each other, they can build a connection that allows room for both conversation and quiet companionship.
