‘14-hour shifts, chest pain ignored’: Genpact faces workplace harassment allegations; probe ordered

An employee claims he was made to continue working even after reporting chest pain. Another account describes a woman being questioned about her availability for work while her fiancé was in intensive care. These are among the allegations against a senior manager at Genpact’s Hyderabad office, where employees have raised concerns about long working hours, alleged gender discrimination and the handling of health-related emergencies. The allegations surfaced after employee Rohit Kotana shared a series of posts on LinkedIn, including a recording of an employee relations meeting that has since gained attention online. Several current and former employees have reportedly raised concerns about the workplace environment at the company’s Hafeezpet office. The manager named in the allegations is Xavier Francis. Genpact has confirmed that an independent internal review is underway, according to a report by Moneycontrol. The claims have not been independently established, and the review is expected to examine the complaints.

Employee alleges he suffered a panic attack after reporting chest pain

In a LinkedIn post shared on October 5, Kotana alleged that he experienced chest pain on July 20 and asked for permission to leave work. According to his account, he was not allowed to leave and later suffered a panic attack and hyperventilation on the office floor, requiring medical assistance.

He also alleged that employees were routinely expected to work beyond their scheduled hours. Some reportedly stayed until 6:30 am or 7 am, even when their shifts were supposed to end at 3 am.According to accounts cited in the report, the senior manager allegedly referred to his own 14-hour working days as an example of commitment and expected employees to follow a similar schedule. The allegations have raised questions about work pressure and how employees’ health concerns were handled. However, the claims remain subject to the company’s internal review.

Posts allege gender bias and insensitive treatment of women

Kotana also raised concerns about the alleged treatment of female employees, including claims that their bathroom breaks were monitored and that comments were made about women’s health. He further alleged that attendance pressures affected employees, including a pregnant woman in a previous team.“One incident particularly highlights the environment. A female colleague was menstruating and blood spilled onto a cafeteria chair. Concerned about being late and not being believed, she felt compelled to photograph the bloodstain as proof,” Kotana wrote in his post.In another post, he shared a recording of a September employee relations meeting. During the meeting, a woman reportedly said her fiancé was in an intensive care unit following an accident. She alleged that management continued to question whether she would be available for work the following day.The posts also raised concerns about how employee complaints were handled. Some workers alleged that the company’s Employee Relations team had not provided satisfactory responses to their concerns. The accounts have prompted wider discussion about workplace expectations, employee wellbeing and the need for companies to respond appropriately when staff raise concerns about their health or personal circumstances.

Social media reacts to the allegations

The posts have drawn strong reactions on social media, with some users criticising the alleged work culture and others praising Kotana for speaking publicly about the complaints. One user wrote, “Genpact, this is disgusting to the core! And newcomers in the industry get excited after receiving an offer letter from you! Absolutely shameful!”Another commented, “This is deeply concerning. Hope these concerns are addressed seriously.”A third user called for accountability, writing, “Unbelievable. There should be strict action against those leaders responsible for such conduct.”Others thanked Kotana for speaking up and drawing attention to employees’ experiences. One user wrote, “Happy to see that people like you initiate to create awareness of what happened around our work environment. Salute to you, Rohit Kotana, for taking this initiative; more power to you and all the affected employees who suffer this type of pain.”While the reactions have largely focused on the seriousness of the allegations, the claims against the manager have yet to be established through the company’s review.

    What has Genpact said?

Genpact told Moneycontrol that employee health, safety and dignity remain priorities for the company. It said it takes concerns about workplace conduct seriously and is committed to maintaining an environment where employees are treated with respect. The company also confirmed that an independent internal review is underway. It said appropriate action would be taken once the review is complete. The investigation will be closely watched as employees have raised concerns about working hours, alleged discrimination and the response to complaints. For now, the allegations remain under review, and the company’s findings are awaited.
