Vikram Mubayi, a chemical engineering PhD student at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), died after going missing during a solo hike in California’s Eastern Sierra, with his family now left seeking answers over what happened.Mubayi’s brother, who had earlier appealed for help on Reddit, later shared an update confirming that search-and-rescue teams had found his brother deceased.“Unfortunately SAR confirmed that my brother did not make it,” he wrote, thanking everyone who had offered kind words and support during the search. He also thanked those who were “so generous” as to go out and join the search.The brother said he might not respond to further messages but wanted those who had helped to know that he appreciated their support and wished he could respond to everyone individually.Mubayi was reported missing after his family lost contact with him during a weekend trip to the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest.His last contact with his family was around 8:37 pm on August 1, when he was hiking near Agassiz Col. Mubayi’s vehicle was still at the trailhead when he went missing. He was carrying a Garmin satellite device and had shared his GPS coordinates with his family.Inyo County Search and Rescue personnel and the California Highway Patrol joined the search. Mubayi’s remains were recovered from the Big Pine Lakes area on August 3.Authorities have not released a cause or manner of death. Investigators said there is currently no evidence of foul play and that the circumstances remain under investigation.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022. In 2022, he took part in Illini 4000, a student-led nonprofit initiative, cycling from New York to San Francisco to raise money for cancer research and patient support services.His family had described him as a fairly experienced hiker in their earlier appeal for help. A university profile also noted his interest in applying chemical and biological engineering to environmental sustainability and climate change.
