Why a Bengaluru man calls ₹2 lakh a month the ‘most dangerous’ salary
Why a Bengaluru man calls ₹2 lakh a month the ‘most dangerous’ salary

A ₹2 lakh monthly salary is often seen as a major career milestone. But a Bengaluru man has sparked a different conversation around the figure, asking whether reaching that level of income can sometimes make people less willing to make bold career choices.Shashank Dixit shared his views on X, where he described ₹2 lakh a month as a particularly tricky point. His post focused on ambition, financial comfort and the difficulty of walking away from a stable income. The post quickly drew different reactions, with users discussing everything from lifestyle expenses and savings to their own experiences with career changes.

Why Dixit singled out ₹2 lakh

Dixit’s argument starts with the idea that the amount can provide enough financial security to make a person feel settled.“₹2L/month is the most dangerous number. Not because it’s too little, because it’s just enough, Just Enough!!!” Dixit wrote. He suggested that reaching this income can change what people prioritize. Instead of looking for ways to grow further, some may become more focused on keeping their current position.

    When income starts defining success

Dixit also connected salary with professional identity.“Slowly, your salary becomes your identity, You focus on maintaining income instead of increasing your value, Comfort zone becomes permanent,” he wrote. For him, the concern is that maintaining an existing income can take attention away from increasing skills or creating more value in one’s career.

The cost of taking a chance

The post then moved to the financial side of career decisions.“₹2 lakh a month is a lot to bet on something with no guarantee. So you stop betting,” he wrote. An uncertain opportunity may not offer the same financial outcome as a stable job. That gap, according to Dixit, can make taking a chance much harder.

    When ambition gets postponed

Dixit also raised the possibility of repeatedly delaying personal career plans.A person may continue telling themselves that they will make a change later, allowing months or years to pass without acting on those ambitions. He summed up his thought with: “After a long time, you realise you never lost your ambition. You just started earning enough to ignore it.”

Users bring spending into the debate

Several users looked at the issue from a different perspective. One commenter argued that the bigger concern is what happens when spending rises along with income.“The real danger isn’t ₹2L/month. It’s when your lifestyle starts costing ₹2L/month. Income gives you options. Lifestyle inflation quietly takes them away.”Another user responded jokingly: “2 lakhs a month is enough to buy enough Magnums. And what kind of man can escape from that kind of prison?”A third user focused on how much could potentially remain after monthly expenses.“35-50k – rent, 20k – send home, 15-20k – gym, weekend parties(1-2), outdoor food, and 15k – groceries. So, are u able to save close to 1 lakh per month or am I missing smtng. 1 lakh savings per month is amazing assuming u get 2 lakh in hand.”

One user shares a personal experience

Another commenter agreed with the broader point but spoke about what happened after losing a comfortable income.“That’s so true, but the moment you lose your income(laid off), panic kicks in. Btw I was in this position, earning $2k a month, then lost the job. Still haven’t been able to find a new job because I was in my comfort zone there. So keep building guys!!”Another user offered a short summary of the discussion: “Comfort is great until you start protecting it more than you protect your ambition.”A further commenter agreed with the idea that ₹2 lakh can become a comfort zone, particularly when considering entrepreneurship.“Totally agree 200,000 INR is a comfort zone in India. And it’s difficult to take risk and become enterpreneur from their. I tried once for 2 year and it was great learning.”Disclaimer: The information in this article is based on the social media post and reactions mentioned in the report.
