In 2012, Taylor Swift pledged $4 million for a Nashville education centre; 14 years later, the space is showcasing artwork by local schoolchildren and artists with developmental disabilities

Taylor Swift’s $4 million gift to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2012 helped create a dedicated education centre in Nashville. The space was designed for more than music lessons: it would give children and families room to learn, experiment and engage with country music’s history. Fourteen years later, the centre is hosting Connection, an exhibition of posters created by Metro Nashville Public Schools students and artists from Friends Life Community, a nonprofit serving adults with developmental disabilities. The museum says the participants explored the history and techniques of Hatch Show Print, its historic letterpress shop, before making their own work. The exhibition brings the centre’s original educational promise to life, showing how a space built for learning can keep opening doors to creativity and community.

    A major gift for education

In May 2012, Swift pledged $4 million towards a new education centre at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. According to MusicRow, it was the largest capital contribution by an individual artist in the museum’s 45-year history at the time. The museum named the centre in her honour. The gift formed part of a wider expansion campaign called ‘Working on a Building: Country Music Lives Here’. The museum planned to grow from 140,000 square feet to more than 350,000 square feet, creating additional exhibition and learning spaces as well as new visitor facilities. The Taylor Swift Education Center was planned as a space of more than 7,500 square feet, spread across parts of two floors. Its design included three classrooms and a children’s exhibition gallery. The museum expected its new facilities to increase its educational capacity by as much as sevenfold. The planned classrooms were intended for a range of activities, from the museum’s flagship Words & Music programme to family events and distance learning. One “wet classroom” was designed for hands-on projects that could get messy, including letterpress art activities connected to Hatch Show Print.

    Learning by making

The centre’s original vision was not limited to traditional classroom instruction. The museum planned spaces where students could explore objects, observe curators at work and take part in activities that made music history tangible. A visible storage area and design studio would allow visitors to see how museum professionals handle and interpret collections. That hands-on approach is reflected in the centre’s current exhibition, Connection. Opened in 2026, the show brings together posters made by Metro Nashville Public Schools students and artists engaged with Friends Life Community. The project began with visits to Hatch Show Print, the museum’s nearly 150-year-old letterpress shop. Students learned about the shop’s history, studied design principles and explored how letterpress printing works. They then created shapes using foam and sponges, printed those forms and used them as inspiration for their finished posters, as per reports. The process gave participants a chance to learn not only by looking at art, but by making it. They experimented with words, images, colour and composition, using the print shop’s techniques to develop their own visual ideas.

    Two groups, one exhibition

The exhibition also grew from a collaboration between the museum and Friends Life Community, which serves adults with developmental disabilities. Friends Life invited Hatch Show Print Master Printer Emeritus Jim Sherraden to work as a teaching artist in residence in 2023. In late 2024, artists from Friends Life Community visited the print shop for a behind-the-presses tour. Sherraden and Jennifer Haston, the organisation’s visual arts programme coordinator, helped participants bring their words, lettering and images to life through poster-making, as per reports. The posters created by both groups form the exhibition’s central focus. The museum says the works use action words and imagery to imagine a future where people connect through creative art and social causes. The title Connection speaks to the ideas behind the exhibition, but also to the relationships built through the process: between students and artists, participants and printers, and the public and the museum. The project demonstrates how a museum education space can bring people together across ages and abilities. It also gives visitors the opportunity to encounter work made by members of their own community, rather than only by established artists or historical figures.

A centre still doing its job

When Swift made her pledge, the museum described the centre as a place for school groups, families, young people and adults. The new exhibition shows how that original ambition continues to shape the space more than a decade later. The education centre is not simply a room named after a famous musician. It is part of the museum’s broader effort to connect people with country music and its creative traditions through participation. In Connection, that means learning about letterpress printing, trying the process and producing posters that reflect the creators’ own ideas. The exhibition is open to museum visitors, with admission included in the price of a museum ticket. The museum also offers free admission for local youth and discounted tickets for up to two accompanying adults from Davidson County and neighbouring counties, with proof of residency.

From a pledge to a public platform

Swift’s $4 million contribution helped establish a permanent place for education within one of Nashville’s best-known cultural institutions. The classrooms, children’s gallery and hands-on programming were designed to make the museum more than a place to view exhibits. They made room for visitors to learn through doing.Fourteen years later, the posters in Connection offer a vivid example of that idea in practice. Local students and artists with developmental disabilities have explored a historic printing tradition and used it to express their own perspectives. The exhibition does not mark the end of the centre’s story. It reflects what can happen when a cultural institution invests in space, teaching and creative access over time. A gift made in 2012 helped build the setting; the people using it today are filling that setting with their own work, ideas and connections.
