A billionaire flying business class while his young children travel economy might seem unusual. But for British entrepreneur John Caudwell, the decision reflects a larger belief about parenting: children should enjoy a comfortable life without assuming that luxury is a basic necessity. The founder of mobile phone businesses Phones 4u and Singlepoint, Caudwell has eight children and is raising three with his partner, former Olympic cyclist Modesta Vžesniauskaitė. His approach gives us a closer look at how money, discipline and emotional security can shape a child’s understanding of the world.

Growing up with little shaped his parenting

Caudwell grew up in a small terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent, England, with very little money. He does not want his children to experience the same financial hardship, but he also wants to avoid overcompensating with excessive luxury.

Parents, when your child refuses to greet relatives, do you make them say hello or respect their choice?

Speaking to Business Insider, he explained that family time has always mattered, even when his businesses demanded much of his attention. He prioritised school sports days and prize-giving ceremonies, showing that a parent’s presence cannot simply be replaced by expensive gifts.

Why his children fly economy and wear affordable clothes

During family holidays, Caudwell travels business class, while his younger children fly economy with their mother. The family also uses budget airline, despite owning access to far more luxurious experiences.Their wardrobes follow a similar approach. Instead of regularly shopping at designer stores, the family buys clothes from Zara and Primark.Caudwell questions whether spending £1,000 on a Gucci outfit would make children happier. His concern is that repeatedly receiving expensive things could teach them to expect special treatment rather than appreciate what they already have.

Fewer presents, clearer lessons about money

Christmas taught the family another lesson. Caudwell recalled buying too many presents, only to see the children become more interested in the cardboard boxes than the gifts themselves. Now, two or three presents are enough. Even restaurant meals reflect the family’s practical approach, with the younger children sharing plates to avoid wasting food. These choices do not automatically teach financial responsibility. Children also need explanations about why money is spent, saved or shared. Still, setting limits can help them understand that wanting something does not always mean needing it.

    Financial support comes with expectations

Caudwell supports his children while they study, but his financial help does not cover expensive social outings or nightclub visits. Instead, he links support to their efforts to build independent lives. His adult children are pursuing careers in fields including psychotherapy, banking, real estate and music. The approach raises a useful distinction: helping children financially is not the same as removing every obstacle from their lives. Support can provide stability while still leaving room for effort, responsibility and personal achievement.

Love matters more than the family fortune

Caudwell’s most important rule is not about money. He says discipline must always come with reassurance that his children are loved. He wants them to grow into good people who leave the world better than they found it. Happiness, in his view, matters more than wealth or sporting achievement. His approach also invites a critical question. Flying economy while a parent enjoys business class may teach restraint, but such rules alone cannot guarantee humility. Children learn from how adults treat workers, handle disagreements, discuss privilege and respond to people with less money.Ultimately, raising grounded children is not simply about denying them luxury. It is about helping them understand that money can offer comfort and opportunity, but it does not determine a person’s worth.Disclaimer: This article discusses parenting choices and financial values based on John Caudwell’s account to Business Insider.
